James is the 19-year-old son of trainer Matthew, probably best known for his exploits with 2020 Stayers' Hurdle runner-up Ronald Pump, and he has already celebrated 33 winners in the saddle. The highlight of those 33? The aforementioned Ulster National, of course.
The popular Oristown-based handler, widely regarded as one of the gentlemen of the racing game, was celebrating again at Listowel last week when Sunriseontheboyne landed a mile handicap at the famous Harvest Festival in County Kerry.
"It means more now," he replied. "I love the game more now than I ever did. You can't compare that feeling of having a winner with anything else. It's magic."
"I think I was only 13 when I started riding out for Gordon," said the 25-year-old Dunshaughlin native. "I had so many brilliant years with him. He was the one who got me going. He got me started and I loved my time there."
If you threw a tenner on each of his rides at Navan in 2025 you would now be €120 in profit right now, while he has also hit the back of the net at Fairyhouse and celebrated a winner on his doorstep at Bellewstown.
